Soft Contact Lens Rotary Indexer

A contact lens manufacturer requested Sunshine AUTOMATION & TOOLING to automate an extremely labor-intensive operation of adhering a lens disc to a metal block. Once attached, the assembly goes to a precision lathe operation for the cutting of the concave contour.

Our solution was to utilize a twelve station rotary indexer with several automatic stations which involved two vibratory feeding stations for the feeding of the blocks & lens.

Special considerations included:

  • The stainless steel blocks required heating to 175 degrees before the adhesive could be applied. This was done utilizing a resistance welding head.
  • The amount of adhesive applied had to be consistent within + 5 degrees.
  • After cooling, the assembly must withstand a rotational force test.

Always believe in your vision.
